Chidimma Adetshina made history by becoming the first Nigerian to emerge first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant.

The competition, described as one of the most thrilling in recent years, celebrated the talents, intelligence, and elegance of women from around the globe.

This hard-fought feat did not come easy for the 23-year-old Chidimma, who had to deal with hatred shown to her by some xenophobic South Africans who questioned her ties to South Africa, having been born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother.

Chidimma initially competed in the Miss Universe South Africa, as she was born and raised in the country. However, she made headlines a few months ago when she officially withdrew from Miss South Africa 2024 after reaching the final round of the competition in response to concerns expressed by some South Africans who questioned her Nationality.

Nevertheless, Chidimma went on to represent Taraba State and win the title of Miss Universe Nigeria, having been invited by the Silver Bird Group, the organizers of the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.

The 73rd Miss Universe competition, held in Mexico, was keenly contested. The final moments of the prestigious event at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City saw an electrifying face-off between Nigeria and Denmark as the two women stood poised to claim the crown.

Ultimately, Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, won the crown, taking over from Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Meanwhile, Chidimma’s exceptional performance and grace earned her widespread admiration from judges, audiences, and well-wishers around the world.

After the competition, Adetshina took to her Instagram page to express her gratitude. She recalled how Nigerians supported her during her lowest point and how Africa as a continent fought for her. She also learned the importance of unity in achieving success.

Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, has spoken of her pride at coming second in the Miss Universe competition, as well as being named Miss Africa and Oceania.
