CAF Awards Nigeria Match, Libya Imposed With $50,000 Fine

The recent football Disagreement between Nigeria and Libya has been brought to an end after the Confederation of African Football CAF awarded three goals and three points to Nigeria and imposed a fine of $50,000 to Libya.

This was the verdict reached after a thorough investigation by CAF following the botched 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifying fixture scheduled for October 15 in the North African country.

The verdict followed an intense and seemingly thorough investigation of the matter by the body’s disciplinary committee following a complaint by the Nigeria Football Federation after the Super Eagles were subjected to twenty humiliating hours of distress and left stranded at Libya’s Al-Abraq International Airport between Sunday, October 13 and Monday, October 14.
The Libyan authorities diverted their flight to Labraq Airport about 300 km from the match venue, just when they were about to land at the designated airport in Benghazi, the Nigerian contingent was left there without food and water.

Drained physically, psychologically, mentally, and emotionally, the Super Eagles, who were not in the right shape to play the match, returned to the country later on Monday.

The Libyan Football Federation tried to put out a false narrative of Nigeria treating them poorly during their visit to the country, a claim rightly found untenable by the Disciplinary Committee.

In CAF’s ruling which was signed by the chairman, Ousmane Kane, the committee found the Libyan Football Federation guilty of breaching Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

With the three points awarded to Nigeria, the Super Eagles have 10 points, maintaining their first position in group D, while Libyan side remains in an embarrassing and humiliating last position with one point.

As it stands, four games have been played by both teams and it’s safe to say that Nigeria has qualified for Morroco 2025.
